April: Establishment of the University of Athens as "Othonian" by a new decree "On the establishment of the University," signed by Otto, with four Schools (Theology, Medicine, Law, Philosophy) and the appointment of the first professors. The decree is the first Provisional bylaw of the institution. The first rector is the School of Philosophy professor, Konstantinos D. Schinas. The first general secretary of the university is Gkikas Dokos, who would remain in this post until 1878.
